Expert day: String instruments

HfMDK students and teachers can take part in an expert day for high-quality string instruments in the Small Hall on May 15, 2024. Guests will be Florian Leonhard (Fine Violins) and Thomas Zweig (Larsen Strings) - they will give an insight into their work with lectures and practical demonstrations.

The idea of the expert day is to present top-class string instruments to students at music universities so that they can experience the characteristics and differences in sound and construction on the original, try them out and thus develop their own personal judgment.

During the day there will be presentations and the opportunity to ask many questions. The instruments presented by Florian Leonhard (violins, violas and cellos) can of course also be played by all students and teachers. In addition, Florian Leonhard will personally carry out sound adjustments on instruments brought along. Thomas Zweig, string expert from Larsen Strings, will demonstrate how a positive change in sound can be achieved by consciously mixing strings.

The guests

• Florian Leonhard is one of the world's leading experts on stringed instruments. In his lecture, he will address the question of how he identifies an unknown instrument step by step and which details he pays attention to in the process.
• Thomas Zweig is a string expert at Larsen Strings.

Schedule for May 15, 2024

10 am: Florian Leonhard: "The process of identifying string instruments" (opening lecture with Q&A)

From 11 am: Possibility to play the presented instruments (a separate room A120 is available). Florian Leonhard will evaluate and adjuste the sound of instruments that have been brought along.

2 p.m.: Lecture and practical demonstration: "Possibilities for improving the sound of string instruments" with Florian Leonhard and Thomas Zweig

3 p.m.: End of the event

The event will take place in the Small Hall.
